Really like this online app from Andrew Fenner @NumberShapes to encourage subitizing and to help develop Counting On as a problem-solving strategy. Lots of evidence that hiding things promotes mathematical development numbershapes.com/hiddendots

The broader point is that education researchers often assume that it's possible to determine what good math teaching looks like in a "vacuum," and then the process of translating to other contexts is trivial work for classroom teachers to implement.
Thanks! - means a lot coming from @berniewestacott! I have some website updates on the way that will build on these ideas. Stay tuned!

I use to be on the team that's like, "Let kids bring phones into the classroom! We'll use them for learning!" The problem, and the reason I've changed my stance, is simply that the attention economy makes this nearly impossible. It's a losing battle for kids & their brain. 1/

Nathan's at it again today. The interesting thing about these ten-frame poppers is that they're easier to push down from the top, so he will start with a full ten and subtract to get to his target number. #TinyPolkaDot

Friday seems like a great day for @PlayDoh in Mr. Vincer's #calculus class at @SHS_Kingfishers. Approximating areas with Play-Doh rectangles and forming Riemann sums. #HRCEmath #ITeachMath

This is amazing - @MNmMath I wonder if there are any books or resources that document how to facilitate activities like this? This seems like an incredible activity, but not something you'd find in a traditional textbook.
A5 One time we separated into several groups and used our feet to measure the perimeter of the tennis court. When we all got a different measurement we talked about why we have standard unit of measure and then went back and measured with yard sticks! #ElemMathChat

A5: It is NOT double. I almost started a fire like that once. Speaking of a microwave, it鈥檚 a great place to practice counting backward (but from afar). #elemmathchat

Henry is keen on "big" things and "little" things so we search for opportunities to identify the "biggest" or the "littlest" of all. #elemmathchat
