Something I think a lot of folks don't realize is how much of a tax weaponized self-doubt adds to every aspect of life.
It's not enough to want to do a thing when every fiber of your being has internalized the whole world of negativity surrounding you.

And yes, this is a thing I experience on a nearly daily basis — despite dozens of papers, having invented significant parts of my field, despite having published a book, there's always still more negativity, more reasons people have to doubt me.

Who knows, maybe I would have realized I was trans earlier if I didn't have so much doubt inflicted on me. Maybe I could have accomplished even more if I knew people believed in me.
As it is, though, I see shit like the "women can't code" scammer, and I pay that tax.

There's never an "enough" to shut up those voices, to placate the doubters and the toxic dudebros, to be accepted. You cannot impress the haters out of their hate, because it's not actually about you — gatekeeping never really is.

So if there's any point to this thread, it's that even as difficult as it is to deny that tax, to refuse the burden the haters try to place on you, at the end of the day there's not really an alternative — their hate and disbelief isn't about you.

I think the least important but most fervent political position that I hold is my deep and frustrated wish that people would recognize how insignificant "millions of dollars" is at the level of national budgets.

To a large degree, there is no difference between between where discourse was in 2000 and where it is today save for magnitude and degree — every mainstream narrative runs interference for the right-wing at every turn by denying the plain fact of their actions.
